RIW Screed Safe - Technical Data

RIW logo

DESCRIPTION

RIW Screedsafe is a self adhesive membrane, consisting of a 1mm rubber modified bitumen waterproof layer incorporating a woven fabric on one face.

TYPICAL USES

RIW Screedsafe has been specifically developed to provide waterproofing beneath ceramic, granite, marble, slate and porcelain tiles when applied onto concrete or screeded floors in wet areas.

DURABILITY

Subject to normal conditions of use, RIW Screedsafe will provide an effective barrier to the transmission of liquid water and water vapour for the life of the tiles applied onto it.

SPECIFICATION

M40 – Stone / concrete / Quarry / Ceramic tiling / Mosaic in accordance with NBS Clause 470 Please consult RIW Limited for further information.

ANCILLARY PRODUCTS

RIW Ltd. produce a range of ancillary products for use with RIW Screedsafe which include:

RIW Screedsafe Primer – A bitumen solution for coating all surfaces prior to the application of RIW Screedsafe Reinforcement Tape and RIW Screedsafe Membrane.

RIW Screedsafe Reinforcement Tape – a tape reinforcing all wall junctions, butt joints and other detail work in the membrane.

RIW Screedsafe Jointing Compound – a high quality, gun applied, butyl rubber based sealant for use at all butt joints in the membrane, pipe entries, wall to wall and wall to floor interfaces.

RIW Screedsafe Putty – a non-setting self supporting mastic for filling small gaps or voids around pipe entries, etc. prior to application

RIW Corner Units – preformed polyurethane corners for use in internal and external wall to floor junction / corners

Advantages

  • Quick and easy to install
  • Simple to detail in critical areas
  • Factory controlled thickness
  • Ideal for fast track & modular construction
  • Accommodates movement in the substrate
  • Compatible with rapid setting tile adhesives
  • Cost effective solution

Construction

General

All construction should conform to the Building Regulations, Codes of Practices and British Standards in current use at the time the building is being constructed.

RIW Screedsafe should only be applied to concrete and screeded floors and under no circumstances should the membrane be applied to timber floors. Timber floors should be waterproofed with RIW Tilesafe only.

Preparation

All surfaces: Should be clean, dry, free from dust, grease, oil, etc. Surfaces must be smooth, sound and flat, therefore all indentations should be filled with suitable filler, and any protrusions struck off.

Oily or greasy surfaces: Should be cleaned with a suitable proprietary cleaner, which is thoroughly rinsed off, and surfaces allowed to dry.

Existing coatings: Should be removed unless they are sound & compatible with the primer and membrane.

Application

Prime all surfaces with RIW Screedsafe Primer and allow to dry.

Where necessary, locate the RIW Corner Units in to the corner whilst the RIW Screedsafe Primer remains wet or tacky.

Apply RIW Screedsafe Reinforcement Tape at all wall to floor junctions. Reinforcing Tape is also to be applied under all butt joints in the main membrane. Use RIW Screedsafe Putty to seal any voids around pipe entries, etc.

Apply RIW Screedsafe membrane to floors removing release paper as work progresses. Joints in the membrane are butted together over the previously applied Reinforcing Tape. A gap of 1 – 3mm is left between the joints for later application of RIW Screedsafe Jointing Compound.

With a normal sealant gun, apply RIW Tilesafe Jointing Compound into all butt joints.

Under no circumstances should Silicone Sealants come into contact with RIW Screedsafe Membrane or Reinforcement Tape.

Only good quality ‘Rapid Setting’ tile adhesive should be used in conjunction with RIW Screedsafe.

Safety

Full health and safety instructions are contained on the product material safety data sheets and these must be referred to before use.
